Group Tutorial with Kate

Updated: Nov 26, 2020

A studio group tutorial looking into the ways that our work from 'Hidden Perspectives' can be taken further, here I have looked into what was said about my work and broke down a few questions that got everyone thinking about my work.

Is the idea of money coming across, and how could she develop this further?

“I can get the feeling about fashion and money, but I feel like because she put in the work – and we were having this discussion about it- that you can’t avoid it and you get caught in this web. You know people get stuck with money, their loans and stuff like that, and it’s similar to clothes. People state that they are ‘broke', but they will still have things like Doc Martins on and Nikes on; along with all this jewellery they own, yet still state they don’t have any money. We were talking about what kind of counts as money and what counts as wealth. You also have cultural currency and you can look back on history, and see things like having black teeth was seen as a good thing because it meant you could afford sugar and things like that. The fact that it’s a web that you can get stuck, it's unavoidable and you ‘have to’ get stuck in the eyes of consumerism.”

“I have to say that this way of drawing girls is quite provocative because that’s what I experience. When you put this in a net I felt in a way, that when you look a fashion magazine or an expensive item, you do get stuck in this net. Suddenly you think should I be stuck in this net, sometimes you get blinded by all these simple lives and the way that they say you should treat yourself.”

“Because this net was discussed last, it was almost like an afterthought for the drawings.”

My opinion

For me the net is a symbol of a hierarchy, I was looking at it in a different sense when I put it up, but when they said it reminded them of money I did start to notice how everyone is always trapped. You can simply go online shopping for one thing, but you can guarantee you will always check out with something more than that because you're always trapped and enticed to spend money that you don’t intend to.

How do you start to work with that?

It was quite interesting to note after the first lecture looking into materiality and commodity, I started to realise what we own and what we wear is a material wealth (not so much like a car or a house), but when people get to a state of desperation they don’t go to sell their newest trainers or their designer jacket, because to them it shows others that they have money, even if they don’t because it's a materialistic thing you want to keep.

Its simple things like perfume, people would rather spend 200 pounds on a 30 ml bottle of CHANEL than pay 50 pounds for a bottle of HUGO BOSS, because they're buying into a bigger brand.

Things to consider for future work:

  • Clothes and stitching

  • Painting on clothes

  • Fashion photography

  • Drawing with thread/string

  • Installation with drawing

  • Labels and tags

  • Is it an image or an object...

  • Sewing machine...

  • Performative, drawing and installation

I'm mainly inspired by clothes because they are such a materialistic thing, its so easy to say “I won't get rid of it because it might fit one day”. It will be interesting to see if anyone (including myself) would be willing to de-clutter their wardrobes, and if so, how much would they get rid of?

“How can you be anti-establishment if you’re part of the establishment”.

“The only way to critique the system is from within it”.
