Photopolymer Workshop

Updated: Apr 16, 2020

My favourite print taken from the Photopolymer Workshop.

Using grafolac film to print and draw on, you can then replicate the image. I decided to look at a magazine image taken from an advert for a pair of jeans. There was something about the way the model is unnaturally posed that caught my eye. It doesn't look comfortable but looks intriguing enough that it might sell the product. I decided to handwrite my text looking at multiple choice answers to dictate multiple sentences, however the viewer looked at it. It highlights the way we think 'Fuck the planet', 'Fuck the conditions', looking at the manufacture of clothing, 'Fuck you' and 'Fuck I look cute', which seems to be the attitude most people have when consuming these goods.

We learnt about the effects different materials can make on the film, and how it gets transferred into a print. I thought this could be an interesting way to make a few drawn prints with an unpredictable outcome.

The plates within the darkroom go through a process of being exposed to UV light, with the image on top in order to transfer it across. A good thing about this process is that the original image doesn't have to be a negative, as the process returns it to the original layout. Once rubbing ink into the plate you can notice the design come out as the ink piles up in the relief of the print. Then it can be run through the press. This process is good for small production runs of prints and can give a nice clean imprint.
