Make It Or Break It

Updated: Apr 14, 2020

An introduction into my first project at UCA and the inspiration behind it.

My Welcome to UCA Farnham.

My first official practical day at UCA Farnham, on the 11th, consisted of being given a collection of images, from famous artists who have created chairs that have form over function, and having to create an inspired piece in 2 days, to then destroy it. The Origami Chair was our selection.

Marking out all the wood to guessed measurements actually turned out successful for us, surprisingly.

Our chair as displayed above managed to be drilled together to form a perfectly stable chair, with visual inspiration from the one we chose. Our inspiration led us to an origami crane, a chair that wasn't supposed to be comfortable due to the steep dip of the chair against the vertical, straight back. For practical use, we couldn't put both wings of the crane on horizontally otherwise it just couldn't be sat on, so we angled it at the way the arm would fall if held by your side.

To destroy our chair, we decided to deface its perfect aesthetic, and make it as gross and disgusting as we could, our solution ....GUM

84 pieces of chewing gum and 32 pieces of bubble gum later, we had a rather sticky and smelly chair. It made the chair an item of furnishing you just wouldn't want to touch, move or sit on. As if it wasn't gross enough, we insisted that Danny spat her coffee all over the back to stain the chair, the drips, the marks and the unexplainable mounds of gum made you question the whole purpose of a chair that couldn't be used.
